Tulips!

March Flower of the Month - Tulips!

Whats not to love about the humble Tulip?  They are as much a symbol of the breaking of spring as the days getting longer and lambs bouncing about fields.  We love Tulips for their range and versatility.  We take full advantage of Tulip season using them across our  floral arrangements, bouquets, and center-pieces.  They are perfect for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, and holidays. Tulips are excellent cut flowers, as they have long stems and a relatively long vase life when properly cared for.

Tulips have been celebrated in art, literature, and cultural traditions for centuries. They have appeared in paintings by famous artists like Dutch Masters, such as Rembrandt and Vermeer. Tulips have also been referenced in poetry and literature as symbols of beauty, transience, and the fleeting nature of life.

Tulips hold cultural significance in various parts of the world. They are particularly associated with the Netherlands, where they have been cultivated since the 16th century. The Dutch “Tulip Mania” in the 17th century, when tulip bulbs were traded at exorbitant prices, is a famous historical event highlighting the cultural and economic importance of tulips.

Tulips are relatively easy to grow, making them popular choices for gardeners and flower enthusiasts. They thrive in well-drained soil and require minimal maintenance once established. Tulip bulbs can be planted in the fall and will bloom in the spring, adding vibrant colors to gardens and landscapes.

The beauty, symbolism, cultural significance and versatility of tulips make them truly special flowers that are cherished by people around the world.

Caring for Tulips

Caring for cut tulips properly can help prolong their freshness and beauty. Here are some tips for caring for cut tulips:

Trim the Stems: Upon receiving or purchasing tulips, trim about half an inch to an inch off the bottom of the stems at a diagonal angle. This helps the tulips absorb water more effectively.

Use Clean Water: Place the tulips in a clean vase filled with fresh, lukewarm water. Avoid using water that is too cold or too hot, as extreme temperatures can shock the flowers.

Change the Water Regularly: Tulips are sensitive to bacteria, so it’s important to change the water in the vase every day or every other day. Rinse the vase thoroughly and refill it with fresh, clean water.

Keep Away from Direct Sunlight and Heat: Place the vase of tulips in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or drafts. Exposure to heat and direct sunlight can cause the tulips to wilt prematurely.

Avoid Fruit: Keep tulips away from fruits, especially apples and bananas, as they release ethylene gas, which can cause flowers to age more quickly.

Use Flower Food: Use the provided flower food by adding it to the water.  Flower food contains nutrients and additives that can help extend the life of cut flowers.

Rehydrate Drooping Tulips: If the tulips start to droop, you can revive them by rehydrating them. Trim the stems again and place the tulips in a vase of fresh water.

By following these care tips, you can help keep your cut tulips looking fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.
